Frame Relay is a service of Qwest that originates from your location as a digital T1 connection (1.54 Mbps) and then transports your data acress the Qwest ATM network to SWCP. Frame Relay is available in most locations in New Mexico that are served by Qwest. A key advantage of Frame Relay service is that Qwest monitors the circuit continually and will dispatch a technician to work on service outages at any time of day or night. A Frame Relay circuit may be installed in as few as 10 business days, but often requires longer.
A point-to-point T1 connection is a dedicated all-digital connection from your location directly to SWCP. Because the rates for this service are distance sensitive, generally this is more expensive than Frame Relay. One exception is if the fiber optic network of Expedius or Time Warner Telecom serves your location. Since SWCP is "on net" with both these companies, a point-to-point T1 can be an ecomonical option.
In either of these cases the full 1.54 Mbps bandwidth is available to connect you to the Internet. You can choose to use all of this, or only a portion, i.e. "fractional T1." You also can choose to have dedicated service, where all of the bandwidth is reserved for your use, or have a measured service, where you are charged only for what you use.
Dedicated T1 service provides dedicated Internet bandwidth 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, and is available in a variety of speeds. The cost of this service will be local loop charges to Qwest plus the charges for Internet access.

The initial charges to establish this service include the installation charges plus the cost of equipment to terminate the circuit. The installation charge is $200 plus Qwest circuit installation charges. For the equipment need a T1 router. Both Cisco and Netopia make quality T1 routers. Ask us about current pricing. You may provide your own equipment, but in that case the support that SWCP can provide for the router may be limited.
Measured service allows for using the full speed of a T1 connection, but is best for cases where it is not used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The monthly charge for this service includes the cost of the T1 connection, usually $400, the cost of the base service, $250, plus any charge for usage in excess of the base amount. The base service includes 20GB of Internet transfer per month. Transfer in excess of 20GB is charged at $7.50 per GB. We provide a website where you can monitor your utilization of this service.
