Osmond PCB

Introduction

Osmond PCB is a flexible tool for designing printed circuit boards. It runs on Macintosh. Its many features include:

• Concurrent support for both Imperial and Metric units

• Easy part editing
• Variable trace widths
• Variable trace spacing
• Curved traces
• Silkscreen, solder-mask, and auxiliary layers
• Signal and ground planes
• Copper fill areas
• Automatic clearance checks
• Easy manual and semi-automatic routing
• Built-in script language
• Gerber (RS-274X) and drill file (Excellon) output
• DXF file output
• DXF file input
• Encapsulated PostScript file output
• Net check output (IPC-356)

Status

After years of development, Osmond PCB is now offered as a commercial application. To obtain a license and an accompanying access code, please visit www.capilano.com. Without the access code, Osmond will disallow printing, Gerber, and Postscript output of designs with more than 700 pins. The latest release is Version 1.0.12, built December 7, 2007. Versions are available for 68K, PPC, and X environments. Based on user reports, Osmond will not work with MacOS versions prior to 8.1. A version of Osmond for Mac OS-X only has been developed using native Quartz graphics for greatly improved rendering. The latest release of Osmond Quartz is 1.0.12, built December 7, 2007. Here are the Release Notes.

A Universal Binary version of Osmond Quartz is available. This version is able to run on both PowerPC Macs and Intel Macs running OS-X 10.4 or greater. The latest release is 1.0.12 built December 7, 2007.

• Download Osmond_PPC, the Power PC version of the Osmond application, including documentation and examples (~2Meg).

• Download Osmond_68K, the 68K version of the Osmond application, including documentation and examples (~2Meg).

• Download Osmond_X, the Carbonized version of the Osmond application, including documentation and examples.

• Download Osmond_Quartz, for Mac OS-X only. This version uses native Quartz graphics.

• Download Osmond_Quartz (Universal), for PPC or Intel Macs with OS-X 10.4 or greater.

• A Starter Library contains about 130 parts including through-hole, surface mount, and connectors (~64K).

• Robert Zusman has provided a library of Osmond part types converted from Autotrax libraries (~88K), (rzusman@amug.org).

• Also, a large library of Osmond part type converted from other sources is available here (~640K).

• If you would just like to look over the documentation, download the Reference Manual (~1.4M) or the Tutorial (~312K).

• Graham Hinton has provided two DesignWorks forms that produce Osmond compatible Part List and Net List information from a DesignWorks design. The first is for flat designs and the second is for heirarchic designs. A modified version of the second script, provided by Don Heavener, is available here.

• Gareth Conner has written some tools for Vectorworks (the CAD package) to add schematic capture capability and export NetList and PartList files to Osmond PCB. These are available here.

• For those familiar with Python, I have developed a Python program called gerber2pdf that converts Gerber files to PDF so they can be viewed and printed easily with the Acrobat viewer.
