Shellac resin is refined from the secretions of Laccifer lacca, an insect indigenous to India and Southeast Asia. The resin comes in a variety of grades that range in color from light golden to dark orange-brown. De-waxed flakes tend to be clearer and more brittle than unprocessed seedlac material, and generally do not require straining. White shellac has been bleached, a process that causes it to lose clarity and age even faster.

Shellac consists of resin and alcohol only. To mix, add it in any proportion you choose to denatured alcohol or ethanol. Let the mixture sit overnight, and stir or shake occasionally. Strain it through cheesecloth to remove any residue (dirt, twigs, etc.).
