Youth in Foster Care Scholarship Program

The Community Foundation's newest program, this program was established to provide student aid awards to youth currently or recently in the New Mexico Foster Care System so they may continue their education at a post-secondary school. Applications will be accepted for the first time in spring of 2009, and awards begin the following fall. Applicants may be high school seniors or recent graduates, or those with a GED. Students may attend college in New Mexico or out-of-state and go to school full time or part-time.
Sussman-Miller Educational Assistance
Award Program

Throughout her life, Shirley Sussman Spiewak was involved with numerous educational and charitable organizations. She and her husband were passionate advocates of education, believing it to be “the one possession that is permanent.” This program provides financial assistance to address the ‘gap’ in financial aid packages for both students beginning their college careers and those continuing their undergraduate work. This is a program for both students graduating from high school and those continuing their education. Awards vary between $500 and $3000 and there are two different deadlines.
Additional criteria:
· attend a college or university full-time
· graduating high school senior OR currently enrolled in college/university
· available statewide
· MUST BE a federal financial aid recipient
DEADLINES:
1) Deadline For High School Students who will attend Out-of-State Schools or In-State Private, Not-For-Profit Schools: Friday, April 24, 2009, 4 p.m. MST.
2) Deadline For High School Students who will attend New Mexico State Public Schools: Friday, June 26, 2009, 4 p.m. MST.
3) Deadline For Current Undergraduates:
Tuesday, Friday, June 26, 2009, 4 p.m. MST

Excel Staffing Companies Scholarships for Excellence

Barbara and Duane Trythall recognize the difficulties faced by individuals who are employed full-time while attending school part-time. Through their business, Excel Staffing Companies, the Trythalls established this fund to assist individuals who demonstrate a commitment towards reaching a career goal. Four or more awards of up to $1,000 each are awarded annually. Applicants must reside in - or work in - Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia or Santa Fe Counties.
Deadline is Friday July 1, 2009.
Additional Requirements:
· work a minimum of 30 hours per week
· have minimum cumulative GPA 3.0
Manuel Lujan Excellence in Education Scholarship

As a twenty-year member of the United States House of Representatives, Manuel Lujan, Jr. saw the need to help young people with their college costs. A fund was established in his honor to provide resources to students from 24 designated central New Mexico high schools. The $700 per year, four-year renewable scholarships are awarded for graduating seniors attending a New Mexico four-year college/university.
Additional Requirements:
· graduating high school senior chosen annually by each of the designated high schools listed below
· student must continue their education in New Mexico
· minimum GPA 2.5
· attend a college or university full time
· deadline established by individual schools
Applications are available ONLY from the counseling offices of the participating high schools:
Albuquerque Academy, Albuquerque High School, Cibola High School, Del Norte High School, Eldorado High School, Estancia High School, Fort Sumner High School, Freedom High School, Highland High School, Hope Christian High School, La Cueva High School, Manzano High School, Menaul High School, Moriarty High School, Mountainair High School, Rio Grande High School, Sandia High School, Sandia Preparatory School, Santa Rosa High School, St. Pius X High School, To'Hajiilee High School, Valley High School, Vaughn High School, and West Mesa High School.
All applicants to Albuquerque Community Foundation Scholarship Programs must be:

New Mexico residents for a minimum of one year.

Attending a U.S. post-secondary, accredited, not-for-profit educational institution.

Some programs are only eligible for students attending New Mexico colleges/universities and some programs are available only to Albuquerque residents.

Reference Form included with application is optional. References are welcome to write a personal letter instead of using the form.
