THE LINDA ESTES GIRAFFE AWARD

The Linda Estes Giraffe Award is given to someone who has taken personal or professional risks in order to stand up for his or her beliefs - someone who has found the courage to stick their neck out to make a difference. The Giraffe Award Endowment Fund was established in honor of Linda Estes, former Associate Director of Athletics at University of New Mexico. Linda stuck her neck out to champion women's equality at UNM and throughout New Mexico.

She chaired the New Mexico Governor’s Commission on the Status of Women, which fought to enforce the equal opportunities for women and girls in athletics mandated by federal law under Title IX. The Commission also successfully challenged the male-only admissions policy of the New Mexico Military Institute, allowing women the opportunity to attend for the first time.

Giraffe Award Winners:

2007 - Emily (Cheromiah) Hunt-Dailey
The 2007 recipient is Emily (Cheromiah) Hunt-Dailey. Hunt-Dailey took a stand for women’s equality in the Laguna tribe by securing a place for women in tribal government.

2006 - Laura Berg
2005 - Captain Marie Miranda, APD
2004- Judy Bierbaum

The first Giraffe Award was given to Judy Bierbaum, a longtime activist and children’s sexual abuse counselor. Other awards were given to Captain Marie Miranda of the Albuquerque Police Department for her work to improve conditions in the APD evidence room and to Laura Berg for her battle for the right of a government employee to express their personal opinions of the government.
