Held on Historic Spreckles Lake
7-8 August 1999
Part 2: On the Lake

The obligatory Group Photograph, just like the old days.

Eager skippers trim for the first round of "boards," or heats. Free sailing in San Francisco is conducted according to the ol M.Y.R.A.A. rules, which calls for match racing, two boats at a time, until every skipper has sailed against every other both running (downwind) and beating (upwind). Two points are awarded for winning a run and three for winning a beat. That's a lot of trips up and down the lake. Oh, and you spend a fair amount of time kneeling by pondside changing trim from run to beat.

Typical action, such as it is, in a Free Sailing regatta. Free Sailing is a low pressure affair. Once your boat is lauched, there isn't much to do but chase it, stroll along beside it, or have a chat with one of the other skippers.

A pair of "Rip Tide"s start a running board.

And the Winner is ...

Jeff Stobbe, which was only fitting, considering the amount of time he put into organizing this event. (Judy Boebert Photo)

And on a beat ... these scenes and more like them can be seen May 27 and 28, 2000, when we all get together and do it again. See you there!
