Win95 Networking Setup

Here is the most straightforward way to set up dialup networking on a Windows 95 machine. There are other ways, but this is the path of least resistance.

This method is more simple than adjusting the settings directly in Dialup Networking and the Network Control Panels. For one, there are less steps, and two, this method does not activate the settings in DUN for 'log onto network', 'IPX' and 'NetBEUI'. Also the WINS Resolution in the Network Control Panel is set usually set to 'Disable' using this method. Also, it configures Microsoft Mail and News as part of the same wizard.

However, it may select 'Client for Microsoft Networks' as the primary network logon (you see the Windows Networking login when Windows starts), so that setting may need to be changed manually at the end, as can any network settings.

You can start the Internet Setup Wizard using any of these alternatives:

Here are some screen grabs. If there aren't notes underneath the image, the user just needs to hit 'Next'. Otherwise, the notes will describe which fields need to be edited.

If the network components are not installed already, you'll see this 'Installing Files' dialogue. (it might appear after step 4 instead). A few things to note about this step. Click 'Next'. There will be a prompt to insert the CDRom or Floppies. 1) If it cannot locate the files, make sure the floppy drive or CDRom drive letter is selected. Sometimes Win95 gets confused about which drive letter it should be looking in. 2) If you get warnings about 'version conflict', say yes to the message which asks you if you would like to keep the newer file.

Choose 'I already have an account with different service provider'.

Type in 'Southwest Cyberport'

Type in the area code and phone number.

Type in the PPP login and password.

Type in the primary and secondary DNS servers.

Type in email address and mail server.

This is the setting for what mail client Internet Explorer chooses for mail. Usually just hit next. If MS Outlook or MS Mail and News is available in the pull down menu choose that, because Exchange is obsolete.

Say Yes when the prompt for reboot happens.
