SWCP was founded by Mark Costlow and Jamii Corley and started life in their
back bedroom in June of 1994. It quickly spread to take over part of the den
as well. This is a network description we wrote
in 1994 complete with some SWCP 'baby pictures'.
1995
In September of 1995 the business had outgrown the home location and we
opened a small office on Juan Tabo, with a frame relay connection back to
the house. Several staff members were added to improve customer support.
We set up our first class room and gave several begining Internet and HTML
classes.
1996
In March of 1996 SWCP boradened its geographical presense to include Santa
Fe, Los Alamos, and White Rock by opening a POP in White Rock. There were
major equipment upgrades to improve FTP, Web, Login and News servers. We
continued hiring to build a knowledgable technical support staff.
1997
SWCP ran into some severe telco facilities shortages through the beginning half
of the year and were unable to get more capacity from US West to the Juan
Tabo location
so we initiated a search for new office space. In October of 1997, working
through a long weekend we moved into our current location on Indian School.
Here are some snapshots of how that space looked
right before we moved in.
1998
1998 saw the additions of the iPass roaming service, ISDN support, and lower
prices, in dial-up access and web hosting. We obtained our own IP space from
the ARIN and increased our dial up capacity significantly. We're now supporting
the K56Flex and V.90 standards in Albuquerque and Los Alamos.
1999
In 1999 we partnered with several vendor companies to offer a suite of
broadband services including business and residential DSL and wireless
service. We revamped our web site and expanded our upstream bandwidth
significantly.
2000
2000 was a busy year. We added New Edge as a DSL partner, and Clearwire as
a wireless partner to offer a fuller suite of broadband products. Our
original DSL partner JATO failed at the end of 2000 making for quite a
scramble to place customers with other alternatives. With the upswing in
broadband we introduced a DSL department to help keep the ordering process
smooth.
2001
We became Southwest Cyberport, Inc in September of 2001 and increased
our out-bound capacity. Our facility is now on-net with Espire, GST and
Qwest giving us a wider variety of bandwidth options.
2002
2002 was the year of infrastructure enhancement. We enlarged our office
space, created an area of machines with alternative OSes, installed a
tape backup jukebox and a backup generator. We also became more involved
in DSL installations and purchased an installation van. Our wireless partner
Clearwire was purchased by the Purelink company.
2003
In 2003 SWCP became more involved in providing new broadband solutions to
an environment starved for those services. We've introduced the First Mile
Alliance, working with apartment complexes, office complexes, hotels and
new housing developments with a wide suite of products to get high speed
access out into places that have been ignored by the current vendors.
Our wireless service SWCP Direct is providing many customers with an
alternative to DSL or higher priced frame relay or T1 circuits.
We've upgraded our web services offering more redunancy and speed with a
new web farm, and lower prices.
2004/2005
2004 and 2005 saw a large growth in our wireless service SWCP Direct expanding
from a couple of Points of Presence to covering most of the greater
Albuquerue area. In December of 2004 we merged with a local ISP,
Thunder Network Technologies.
2006
At the beginning of 2006 brought another merger with another excellent
local ISP, New Mexico Internet Access.
