The "extension" at the end of a domain name, like ".com", is called the Top Level Domain, or TLD. The different TLDs are operated by different entities all over the world. They all have different policies, restrictions, prices, and customs. For example, .uk domains can only be registered for 2 years at a time, and .asia domains must be at least partially owned by someone residing in Asia.
