SWCP is introducing comprehensive Microsoft (MS) Internet Information Server (IIS) hosting packages and support services for customers needing Microsoft Active Pages, Microsoft .NET or wanting to leverage their own Microsoft development environment. Our IIS Servers and MS SQL Servers are located in our main facility on our high speed backbone.
The standard IIS hosting environment is Windows 2000, Microsoft Internet Information Server 5.0, and SQL Server 7.0. SQL Server 2000 is also available upon request. Our Microsoft Solution Provider expertise can provide the highest level of support with Microsoft applications, development and integration.
You may elect to supplement our standard IIS hosting packages with optional networking and consulting services for seamless interoperability.
Our standard IIS hosting packages, optional services and integration services makes SWCP the most flexible, cost effective, scalable option for businesses desiring a Microsoft IIS shared hosting environment. Our pricing allows you to scale the size of your site from small personal web sites to enterprise scale solutions integrated into your internal LAN/WAN.
PERSONAL IIS HOSTING: If you are a Front Page user that would like to set up a personal web site consider the Personal IIS Hosting Plan. You will be able to take advantage of all FrontPage features and publish directly to our IIS Server. This package is a great introduction to publishing and includes many popular effects and features including button rollovers, standard FrontPage components and the easy creation of frames and forms. This plan assumes that you do not own a domain name and your site would be a part of the Southwest Cyberport domain.
SMALL BUSINESS IIS HOSTING: This plan is specifically designed for small business that would like to publish under a virtual domain name. We recommend this plan for companies that need to establish a graphical web presence and may also need email response forms directed to a company email domain. The Small Business Hosting plan assumes a slightly higher volume of transfer than the Personal Hosting plan. You will be able to take advantage of all FrontPage features and easily expand your site if necessary.
SMALL BUSINESS DATA IIS HOSTING: This plan is specifically designed for small businesses that would like to publish under a virtual domain name and publish a MS Access database for dynamic data queries and updates. This plan is a perfect introduction to web hosting for businesses that must distribute or update dynamic data to a highly distributed customer base or employees at multiple sites. As the primary database supported is MS Access 2000, the plan is geared for sites that require a relatively low level of concurrent data manipulation (select, insert, update delete). The Small Business Data plan assumes a slightly higher volume of transfer than the Small Business plan yet a limited number of concurrent data users. You will be able to take advantage of all FrontPage features and easily expand your site if necessary.
SMALL ENTERPRISE DATA IIS HOSTING: This plan allows for sophisticated, high volume data access from a small Microsoft SQL database. This plan is a perfect for customers that need the power, concurrency and performance of Microsoft SQL but will store a limited amount of historical data and therefore do not need a large storage area.
Benefits: The SMALL ENTERPRISE HOSTING package allows you to build on your existing investment in Microsoft tools and technologies. If you are exploring the idea of live data access on your website this is a logical starting place.
DELUXE ENTERPRISE DATA IIS HOSTING: If you are anticipating a high volume of data intensive transactions from your site and need the power and flexibility of an enterprise scale database, our DELUXE ENTERPRISE DATA HOSTING package is the perfect strategy. This plan allows the storage of more data and assumes more DSN access for report creation and updates from internal applications.
Benefits: With our enterprise scale hardware and software configuration you will have the benefit of a world class data center for only a fraction of the cost of installing and owning this robust environment. The DELUXE is ideal for companies who have Microsoft as an internal standard and would like to develop, internet sites, e-commerce sites, virtual private intranets, extranets, custom applications and other implementations. The storage threshold assumes a high volume of transactions that are inserted, updated and deleted as well as queries of historical data.
Based upon optional services, you can customize the degree of support required for your virtual enterprise without incurring the cost of hardware, tools and software licenses.

Q: How do I know if Access can support my
site?
(Assumes Access 2000
database)
The Microsoft Access Database product is an outstanding introduction to delivering live data on the web. Access however, was never designed to deliver enterprise scale applications. Performance will degrade rapidly if a large volume of data is inserted, updated and deleted by multiple users. In general we recommend Access for low volume sites.
Q: How do I know if I should host on an IIS Server or UNIX Server?
If your company has a large investment in Microsoft technology, there are many advantages to standardizing your web environment on Microsoft IIS and Access/SQL. Any pages you are using internally on your company Intranet can be transferred to the Internet with no or minimal changes. The skills profile of many companies are based upon Microsoft products and therefore may better leverage "in house" talent and technical staff.
If your company data center is currently using Microsoft SQL or Access 2000 it may be cost effective to simply extend this platform to include your internet application and easily address the data movement issues associated with UNIX based applications and data conversion between different platforms and applications.
Microsoft has developed an extensive training program that includes third party training centers, online training and independent publishers. The material available for both beginners and experienced developers and database users is exhaustive.
Each customer must make this determination based upon their current information technology architecture, their future direction and the staff and skills available to them.
Q: What if my site grows rapidly. How expensive is it to switch to one of the Enterprise IIS Hosting plans that include Microsoft SQL?
To update your plan to include one of your SQL Enterprise plnas, you will only need to request the change and pay the difference of the set up fee. Billing however is calculated monthly, and therefore if you elect to switch mid-month, the entire month will be billed based upon the Deluxe pricing. We recommend you schedule the transfer in advance to avoid fees for mid month transfers.
Q: I have heard that the Microsoft NT and 2000 operating systems is not secure. How have you addressed this?
All standard network security has been implemented at SWCP including but not limited to passwords and firewall configurations and current security patches. Additionally, all internal SQL database access is through a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel. While this is slightly less direct to login to, it provides much more security that a SQL login. SWCP also allows use of MS IIS Components, but will not register custom developer components that require any special set up on the server.
We are continually monitoring the commercial components that are available for security for consideration for inclusion on our server.
Q: What can I personally do to make my site more secure?
A: It is important that you select passwords and other devices that are not obvious. It is also important when you use DSNs, that you do not allow multiple individuals the use of a DSN once one is created. It is better to create a DSN for each user than to have a pool of users share one. This is not an issue in an ASP application that uses a single DSN. Where it becomes an issue is where multiple individuals have direct access to the database to run reports or make inserts updates or deletes using a front end like Access.
Q: Can I move my MicrosoftAccess database to Microsoft SQL easily to take advantage of a Enterprise Data Hosting plan?
A: It is important to consider scalability when designing your Microsoft Access database. There is no simple answer. Some features of Access do not translate directly to SQL 7.0, the most notable being the popular cascading updates and deletes. A well designed database in Access however can be migrated using utilities available from Microsoft. Design flaws in a database however will not be fixed by these utilities.
Q: What is the difference between MYSQL and MS SQL 7.0?
MYSQL is an outstanding database that is available on our Apache servers. It is very attractive primarily due to it's speed and the relatively low cost of the licenses. SQL 7.0 and SQL 2000 however has some advanced features such as triggers, replication, Data Transfer Services (DTS), integrated NT Security and numerous monitoring utilities that are not available from MYSQL and may be highly desirable for certain applications. SQL 7.0 and SQL 2000 are also supported by many 3rd party publications, books and training materials that are not as readily available for MYSQL. If dynamic data exchange is desired between and internal Microsoft SQL database and the SWCP shared MS SQL database Data Transfer Services (DTS) makes this a very straightforward process that may savedevelopment time and costs.
Q: I have heard that the Microsoft NT and 2000 operating systems are not secure. How have you addressed this?
All standard network security has been implemented at SWCP including but not limited to passwords and firewall configurations. Additionally, all SQL access is through a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel. This requires all users to first login to the SWCP network. From there, they can access their SQL account. This adds an additional layer of security to our network.
Additionally, only standard IIS components are registered on our server. No custom developer components are registered on our shared hosting server.
Q: What can I personally do to make my site more secure?
It is important that you select passwords that are not obvious. It is also important as you request DSNs, that you do not allow multiple individuals to share a DSN once one is created. This is not an issue in an ASP application that uses a single DSN or DSN-less connection. It becomes an issue is where multiple individuals have direct access to the database to run reports or make inserts updates or deletes using a front end like Access.
Q: What type of development environment do you recommend for application development?
SWCP does not include debugging sites or applications as a part of your monthly fee. You may avoid consulting and service fees, by setting up a development environment that closely approximates our delivery environment. We recommend that you use MSDE or Desktop SQL 7.0/2000 as your development database and then use scripts to recreate the database on our server. You may also elect to backup the final database SWCP can "recover it" for you for a reasonable fee.
While you may use, numerous front-end development environments to develop your site, it is important to remember our core Microsoft configuration does not include any 3rd party or "shareware" components. As our environment is a shared hosting environment, we do not register "shareware" components until they have been thoroughly tested and evaluated and recommended by qualified third party review.
Q: What if I absolutely must use a custom component?
First we recommend that you consider a "non registerd" component that is local to your directory and domain. If your site requires features not available in our hosting packages, beyond what you can develop within your web, or you require a higher degree of administrative control than shared hosting allows, feel free to call us regarding hosting your site on a dedicated server. Our pricing is competitive. You may also elect to lease a dedicated server with a contract of one year.
