ABOUT THE SDOC TRACKING TEST SITE:

The tracking area is near Placitas, New Mexico (About 15 miles north of Albuquerque). The links below will hopefully answer some of your questions. The weather in January will normally be about 20 degrees at night and warm to the mid-forties in the afternoon. Snow is rare but it does happen. When it does snow, there can be mud which is always fun. The TDX in February can be warmer and windy and there is still a possibility of snow.

Most tracks will have some cactus but the judges are generally careful to avoid it as best as they can. The site is a high desert at an elevation of about 6000-6500 feet.

PICTURES OF OUR MOST RECENT TRACKING TEST

This link will hopefully allow you to download a very large zip file containing pictures of our most recent Tracking Test. This zip file only has a limited time on the server so the link may not always work. It is more apt to work soon after one of our tests. Download pictures of most recent test.

LOOK AT THE SITE USING GOOGLE MAPS

The following link will redirect you to a Google-Map of the Big Foot Tracking Area.
Click the following link and note the 5 mile Forest Loop Road. Click the 'satellite' button in the upper right for that view. Click, hold and drag the mouse to move around. Zoom buttons are on the upper left.

Brief explaination of how to use the Google Map tool

If you've never used Google Maps before, here is a brief introduction. Click on the above link and you will see a satellite view of the tracking area overlayed with highlighted major roads. Notice the upper right corner of the display says "Map", "Satellite", "Hybrid". Try clicking the three to see what the effect is.

On the top-left are four directional arrows that move your view in the appropriate direction. Immediately below that you will see a vertical scale with a Plus(+) and minus(-) sign at each end. This controls zooming in and out. If you zoom out far enough, you will see a map of the whole world.

Now for the fun stuff. If you position the mouse over an area of interest and then double-click the mouse, the map will center itself where you clicked and try to zoom in on it. If you click the mouse and drag it (do not release the mouse while dragging it) the map will move underneath.

OK... Now zoom out and then double-click over the approximate area of where your house is located. Drag the mouse and keep double-clicking until you can see the car parked in your driveway. Neat! Another thing you can do is grab the blue-box in the lower right corner with your mouse and drag it around. It's a faster way to look at a big area without having to do a bunch of mouse clicks on the arrows.
