Immunization

Facts:

  • New Mexico's immunization coverage rates have increased over the last few years due to the efforts of healthcare providers across the state. In 2005, 78.4% of New Mexican children 19-35 months old were completely immunized, placing us at #36th nationally. This is down from a 2004 rate of 83.5% but represents an improvement from the 2002 low of 64.6%.
  • Most NM Children can be brought up-to-date in just one visit.
  • Children beginning on time can complete all indicated vaccinations before they turn 13 months old.
  • Medicare covers the cost of pneumococcal and influenza vaccine and their administration by recognized providers, even when the visit to the doctor includes other Medicare-covered services.
  • Pneumococcal infection accounts for more deaths than any other vaccine preventable bacterial disease. When associated with sepsis, pneumococcal infection carries a high mortality rate in elderly patients.

Goals:

  • The goal of Healthy People 2010 is to achieve and maintain an immunization rate of  90%.
  • To increase pneumococcal vaccination across New Mexico in at-risk groups.

CPI Intervention:

  • Develop a preferred immunization schedule - "Done By One."
  • Disseminate information on office systems and practices that impact NM immunization coverage levels and share best practices.
  • Develop educational materials and presentations for both providers and parents on the Statewide Immunization Information System [SIIS].
  • Presented an educational forum to the NM Senate on February 3, 2005 on childhood immunizations as part of the Strategic Comprehensive Statewide Health Plan.
  • Develop an annual Pneumococcal Vaccination Fact Sheet with information on indications, contraindications and precautions, side effects, storage and administration, discount pricing, and reimbursement codes and procedures.
