Pumkin Chunkin (Estancia style)

Date:  Saturday, October 18th
Time:  9:30 am
Location:  We will meet in Estancia at the Valley Express Gas and Convenience Store. It’s in the middle of town on Hwy 41 on the west side of the road. It looks like there is a large dirt area just north of the store to park. Estancia is about 54 miles from the “Big I” and should take about an hour.  Click here for Map and Ride Sheet
Contact: Joe & Janet

The Ride:  You have your choice of a loop ride of around 58 miles or any number of out and backs to the small towns in the foothills of the Manzano Mountains.

At the south end of Estancia we will turn west onto NM 55 and climb out of the Estancia basin towards the Manzano’s. This is a steady challenging climb to the little town of Tijique 13.7 miles. There is a cute little store here if you need a snack.

At this point the highway turns south and levels (but gets a case of the rollers).  Another 2.5 miles will bring you to Torreon. If you are looking for a shorter ride then either one of these quaint mountain villages make a good turnaround point ...and the return is downhill.

Those who choose the loop continue on through the towns of Manzano and Punta de Acua before arriving at Mountainair at the 35.2 mile point. A left turn on US Hwy 60 brings you to the run back down into the Estancia Valley along the railroad tracks towards Hwy 41. Another left turn at the 47.2 mile point and you are headed back toward Estancia.

By this time the festivities at the Pumpkin-Chunkin should be in high gear if you want to avail yourselves of the fair, food, and fun or we can meet in Moriarty for lunch.

Ride Leader(s): Your Name Here!

The Chile Peddlers is a very loose group of like-minded folks who love to ride.  In the past (I'm talking the OLD DAYS here...), each month’s ride was “sponsored” by different members…to spread the wealth (so to speak)...and I know many of you would have great ideas for rides.

Recently, Janet and I have been listing all the rides and, with so many new people on the list, is seemed that folks didn’t know that they could, or should, sponsor a ride…so…this is your chance.

This is all you do.

Send me a brief description of your favorite ride, when you would like it to start, and any choices for lunch afterward.  You can supply me with a map if you choose or I can make one for you.  I’ll take care of posting the information and sending out emails to the group list.  If you are worried about “taking care” of the other riders, we have always been an independent bunch… we all do our own ride but we don’t leave anyone in the lurch.  So if you want to share your faviorate ride with the Chile Pedalers just let me know.
