New Members JULY, 2002

Jonathan Brinkerhoff moved to Albuquerque a year ago, just learned of the Chile Pedalers,  so decided to join.

AND
Dan & Kristin Baker who are new to tandeming are borrowing Dean and Lee Marvin's old Sovreign. “I wanted to join so we get the email.” They  would like to BUY before too long. “At this point I'd like to ride a few different bikes, so if any club members have recently upgraded and are considering selling a mid-level bike we would like to check it out. sizing is aproximately L/M.”

Michelle & Charles Kerr have been interested in Tandem Bicycling for some time...they are currently looking to buy their first Tandem Bike (yikes!), and are interested in joining our club for ride ideas, technical advice, etc,  etc.

Jeanne Zamora and Keith Ashmore send greetings  from Farmington.  They bought a co-motion from tandem cycle works in Denver at the Velo Swap.  Just got finished having a great 111 mile ride at El Tour de Tucson  (although it was the longest ride by far on the tandem).

Frank and Stephanie Cherne -- Captains
Amanda and Andrea Cherne -- Stokers
They are from Los Alamos. Hope at some point the Kintanars/Smith and Cherne tandems come at the same so you can swap stories (maybe even stokers)!

Request from Frank Rossi:

I'm writing to see if you can ask some of the other club members a question for Shannon and I.  Frank, Jr. is now one year old (turned one on 8 Feb) and so I quickly bought a child seat to go on the back of our tandem.  My plan was to have Frank ride on the back while we pulled Brigit and Maria in our Burley trailer.  Our test ride yesterday did not go well.  With that much weight Shannon and I had tough time getting the bike started.  And whenever we came to a turn the bike felt very unstable, like I didn't have much control over the front wheel and steering.  After that Shannon thinks she remembers that whoever sold us the bike recommended we not use a child seat on the back but only pull a trailer.  Something about weight distribution.  (Fine time to remember, after I had bought and installed the seat!)  From an engineering standpoint that seems to make some sense.  Possibly there wasn't much weight on the front tire, making steering difficult, or maybe all that weight concentrated on the back end of the bike is too much for a long frame like a tandem has.

Anyway, can you ask around and see if anybody has tried a kid seat on the back of their tandem?  I've already taken it off and put it on my mountain bike, for those days Shannon needs a break from the kids I figure I can take all three out and get a good workout.  But currently we are at a loss of how to use our tandem with three little ones.  Getting sitters is hard enough, especially during the day to go for a bike ride.  It just kills me to have it sit and not get used.  Maybe I need to pawn off Brigit on the neighbors more and just take the two little ones in the trailer.

Enough of my complaining.  Enjoy the upcoming NM spring.

(Editor’s note: Frank & Shannon rode with us until they moved away several years ago. If you can help Frank contact him at therossi5@earthlink.net )

More Important News

More new members: Jeff McGolthin and family. He rides a triple with children (4 yrs.& 6 yrs.) They live on White Sands Missle Range.

Thanks to the diligence of some Chile Pedalers at the Trintiy Site Ride. We have 2 new tandem bikes in our club. The hard sell of  “no dues, no officers and no meetings” won them over. Please give a hearty CP Welcome to Julie & her boyfriend and Johanna & Will DeMay. It’s great to have you in the club. Hope you can come to all our future rides

Important Club News

It has been decided by Dean Marvin and yours truly that we will discontinue our dues as of January, 2001. We won’t have dues because we don’t have any expenses. I will also discontinue sending the Newsletter in hard copy.  If we have expenses in the future, for example we have to pay for our Web site, we will institute dues and let you know. Anyone who wants to be a member just sends me their e-mail address and I will add them to my notification list.
