See Mark’s previous article on restaurant websites with examples of how to alienate your customers before you even get started.
Wi-Fi radio connections to the Internet at home, the office, and even in your local coffee shop are no longer a futuristic novelty but a convenience that many users rely upon every day. With ease, however, may come a very unrealistic feeling of safety. As you might suspect, broadcasting your personal data through the air is not without hazards. Consequences can be quite serious, like having your computer directly accessed by hackers, with your confidential information, documents, and credit card numbers stolen, or it being used for other illegal activities for which you might be blamed. It does happen. Recently, a panicked customer called in. He had received several serious DMCA complaints and threats from a giant media company that claimed he had illegally downloaded their content – either music or movies – and they had the right Internet address. Yet, the man hadn’t done anything wrong except to use his Wi-Fi at home wide open and unsecured. Some unscrupulous neighbor must have profited from his naivety. The customer’s still waiting to see if the complaining company will take further steps against him, but meanwhile one of our techs set him up with strong WPA security to prevent further stealthy theft of his connection. Basic Home and Office Defense Proper set up is critical. Most of the steps to protect your computer should be implemented from the moment when you first set it up for Wi-Fi. While it’s impossible to … Continue reading →

Search engine optimization is often a black art. The exact algorithms Google and other search engines use to rank one site higher than another in search results are both proprietary secrets and constantly being refined. What we do know is the more legitimate links to your website from outside sources the better your rank. Also, fresh information is valued above content that never changes. Your content should be valid useful articles, and not look like a list of keywords or search terms. In other words you shouldn’t try and game the system, as the search engines attempt to detect that behavior and will penalize you for it. SWCP has several directories where you can get legitimate links your your web pages. The Epromenade is a category based directory, and it feeds our business, non-profit, and personal directories. If you’re an SWCP customer you get a free listing in several categories, and in either the business, non-profit or personal directories. We recently added a new feature, you can have an individual “map” page with a Google map showing your location, address, website pointer, logo and a longer description about your company. To get a listing login to our members only area and fill out the “Request an Epromenade listing” form. Here’s an example of a “map” page listing for SWCP.

If you are using a slow internet connection from a laptop or desktop computer, try this trick to use the lightweight “mobile” version of many popular websites. These sites are designed for small screens and lower-bandwidth smart phones, but they’re quite functional and perfect for computers with slow internet connections. Just follow these steps: You need to use the Firefox web browser. Download Firefox here (it’s free) and install it if you don’t already have it. This may take a while if you have a slow connection. You’re using Firefox to view this page now, right? Good… Click here, then click the + Add to Firefox button. Proceed through the steps to download and install the User Agent Switcher Firefox extension, then restart Firefox. In your Firefox menu, go to Tools -> Default User Agent -> and select iPhone 3.0 That’s it. Test it out by going to CNN. You should be automatically redirected to CNN’s lightweight, mobile site – the address is http://m.cnn.com/. This should work for the “major” websites like Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Facebook, etc. To turn this behavior off, go to Tools -> iPhone 3.0 -> and select Default User Agent. You can easily switch between mobile and full versions of websites by changing this setting. This can be useful any time you are using a slow internet connection including • using a dial-up internet connection • using a slow public wi-fi access point at a coffee shop, hotel, airport, etc • using internet tethering through … Continue reading →

While our webfarm servers do not have Frontpage Extensions installed, it is possible to publish a site created with Microsoft FrontPage 2000 via FTP. For relatively simple websites, this can be an easy way to manage your own content without having to write any HTML.FrontPage 2000 “How do I turn off Front-Page Extensions?” This is most likely the most important step in using Front-Page on the SWCP Web-Farm. This should also be the first step in editing, or designing your sites. To do this: On the Tools menu, and click Page Options. In the Page OptionsCompatibility tab. Under Servers drop down list, click to clear Enabled with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions. “How do I upload the pages?” 1. From the file menu at the top of FrontPage, Click File and then select Publish Web 2. A new pop-up screen will appear. Click on the Options button. 3. On this screen enter your FTP address and folder path. (Ex: ftp://ftp.swcp.com/users/<Username>/public_html/(YourDomain.com)/ ) * Replace <Username> with your SWCP username and replace (YourDomain.com) with your actual domain, suppressing the ‘http://www” 4. On the same screen select your options as shown below. Once you have verified everything is correct, click on the Publish button. 5. A message will appear alerting you to the fact that the server does not support FrontPage extensions. Click OK. 6. Click Publish a second time. 7. It is now time to enter your account Username and Password This information … Continue reading →
