We’ve noticed there are several Joomla sites out there which have not been updated to the latest version of the Joomla software. This is alarming since many security exploits have been discovered in Joomla over the past couple of years. Sites running older Joomla software are vulnerable to being taken over by cyber-vandals or crooks. The Joomla authors have done a great job of releasing new versions quickly as exploits are found. However, older versions of Joomla (1.5.x especially) are somewhat difficult to update. It’s not a simple button-push. Depending on how extensively the site has been customized, portions of the update may need to be applied file-by-file to avoid breaking functionality of the site. It’s tempting to just ignore the problem and hope your site won’t be found by hackers or vandals. However, the bad guys are quite adept at scanning the internet for sites running vulnerable versions of various software. If you don’t update your site, there is a very high probability that it will get defaced, or worse. At SWCP we have seen three Joomla sites compromised in the past month. So what to do? If you have a Joomla 1.5.x site you have 3 options: 1. Update to the latest 1.5.x Joomla release This is the simplest and probably cheapest option in the short term, but may not be good for the long haul. Have your web developer apply the latest Joomla update to your site. … Continue reading →

Southwest Cyberport is pleased to announce that our iPhone app, Mail Minder, is now available in the Apple App Store! Mail Minder – Intelligent Push Notifications for Email Mail Minder alerts you when important messages come in. Tell Mail Minder what to watch for: messages from a particular person, or location, or with certain key words in the subject. Then relax and let Mail Minder watch for them while you get on with your life. No more obsessively checking email every few minutes, wondering if the client has replied to your proposal, or your brother has emailed about the new baby, or the airline changed your flight after you left the hotel. The app is free (ad-supported) for up to 3 Minders, with in-app purchases avaialble for subscriptions. Paid accounts can add more Minders, get more frequent polling for new messages, and have no ads in the app. Mail Minder works with any standard POP or IMAP account (SWCP, GMail, etc.). Follow this link to download Mail Minder for free from the App Store!

This post is from guest blogger Peter H. Mantos of Albuquerque business consultancy Mantos Consulting, Inc. (Also a long-time SWCP customer) The business community is well aware of the need to backup critical computer systems. However, very few small businesses have actually tested their backup system by performing a recovery. Business managers operate under a false assumption that they are protected from the worst. This article explains some common reasons that “successful” backups fail to meet business continuity needs. It encourages business owners to ensure that information technology (I.T.) systems can be recovered through actual testing. 1. INTRODUCTION You’re smart. You know that while wise use of computers (information technology, or “I.T.”) offers competitive advantages, they have now become a requirement, a “necessary evil” to stay in business. You also know that I.T. sometimes fails and without it, you are dead in the water. So, being smart, you do your backups; perhaps even regularly and even automatically. Perhaps you don’t back up every computer in the office every day or every week, but at least you back-up your important data; maybe even using an offsite service or by taking copies offsite. Good for you! But have you ever tried to recover using those backups? If not, don’t be smug about being backed-up! Many people have been unpleasantly surprised when the fickle finger of computer fate strikes. Some find that the backups don’t really restore the data or the functionality they … Continue reading →

As you may already know, .PRO domains have been around for several years. However, they were previously difficult to register and maintain. So much so that our partner registrar, OpenSRS, did not even carry them. Recently they have streamlined the administration of .PRO domains, and now SWCP is happy to be able to register them. To celebrate we’re running a 2-for-1 promotion until Feb 15th 2012! Buy a .PRO domain for $20, and we’ll register it for 2 years instead of 1! .PRO domains are intended to be used by licensed professionals (Doctors, Lawyers, Architects, Engineers, etc.) As such, there is some additional information you have to provide when you register the domain (your license number, and a pointer to the authority which issued the license). We have a page describing a bit more about .PRO domains, complete with a request form if you want to get one of your very own, right here.

The .xxx domain registry has gone live. We’ve registered several .xxx domains for customers who want to keep them out of the hands of others. Most people don’t need to worry about that, but some folks with high-profile domains, or domains that have the potential to sound a little risqué in the right light are being a little extra cautious. When we register a domain for this purpose, the WHOIS lookup for the domain looks like this: whois somedomain.xxx NOT AVAILABLE In this case, “NOT AVAILABLE” means the domain has been taken by someone so it is not available to be registered. Note that the owner of the domain is not printed. If you have any questions about .xxx domains, drop a line to help@swcp.com.

I have a pet peeve — restaurant web sites which don’t work. There is no doubt that it is hard to produce a “good” web site. “Good” means a site that gives people the information they want, entices them to visit the physical business, and doesn’t frustrate them into going away. Every business category is full of examples of bad web sites, but restaurants seem to be particularly vulnerable to the kinds of mistakes mentioned here. Why is that? There are some common factors that apply to many restaurants and conspire to create a similar outcome. Restaurants are often small businesses, mostly single-location, where the owner-operator wears many hats. There is rarely a full-time marketing person available to guide the choices, and often the web site is produced by the owner, or the owner’s friend or relative. But even if the owner hires a web design firm, the “who is the customer?” problem rears its ugly head. The web designer’s job ultimately is to make the restaurant owner happy. The owner needs a web site that will attract and keep customers. But it’s very easy for the owner to get caught up in the excitement of the new design, and approve (or request) bells and whistles that seem nifty but add nothing to the overall value of the site (I’m looking at you, auto-playing background music). One of the hardest things for a web designer to do is tell the … Continue reading →

A new domain name extension, .xxx, is about to be unleashed on the world. Unlike the familiar .com, .org, .tv, .mobi, and other extensions, .xxx domains are intended for use by a specific community on the net. The proponents of .xxx have been trying to establish this new Top Level Domain (TLD) for a decade. The process has been bogged down in a political morass over whether .xxx should exist, who should run it if it does, and how it should be run. Fast forward to 2011. ICANN, the international organization which holds sway over all Internet domain registries, has approved a plan for the .xxx TLD. There seems to be concensus among unlikely partners that .xxx domains should exist. Proponents include members of the adult entertainment industry who want to provide a safe environment to sell adult services, as well as religious and parenting groups who want to relegate smut to a red-light district which can be easily blocked. The .xxx TLD, which will be administered by Florida company ICM, is in the “sunrise” period right now (more on that below), and will go live in December 2011. The .xxx TLD has unique features that make it different from all other domains that currently exist. A few of these are: Domains are intended specifically for a certain community (the adult entertainment industry). Sites in the .xxx domain will be malware-scanned daily through a deal with McAfee. They must also … Continue reading →
