An informal presentation and performance of Mr. Near's newest work for organ. The Sonata for Organ was first performed by Mr. Case in Santa Fe on February 25th. (Details)
Mr. Near, one of our best-known American composers, talked about some of the questions he hears most frequently, such as "how long does it take to write a piece of music" and "where do you get your ideas?" He then introduced his new sonata, which was beautifully performed by Mr. Case on the Casavant organ. Afterward, Mr. Near took questions ranging from how composers meet deadlines to how much freedom a performer should have when interpreting a composer's work. The conversations continued at a reception afterward.
One of the most exciting organists of our generation, Ms. Preston has performed on many of the most famous instruments in the world.
