Using Roundcube to manage your Email
Roundcube is a webmail client that is a favorite of the SWCP staff. It has a number of features that aren’t obvious on casual use. Two of these features that save me an enormous amount of time are selective filtering and color coding messages. In this post I’ll discuss color coding. I’ll show you selective filtering in a later post. Color Coding Messages There are always some people whose messages you need to see and act on before any others. They might be family members or important clients, but missing an email from them is BAD. I use the highlighting feature of Roundcube to be sure I don’t miss these. Below is a example of what my INBOX looks like: The green items are from folks in our Networks Operations Group, light blue is from Tech Support staff, aqua is the DSL department, purple from our company head, and bright blue from customers I’m currently working with. This makes it really quick to figure out what I need to look at. How to set up Color Coding First select “Settings” from the upper righthand tool bar. Once in settings select the “Message Highlights”. Initially you’ll just see an empty gray box with an Add Row and a Save button at the bottom. Once you’ve saved some items you’ll see each of them listed. You can choose to match on Sender, Recipient, Subject or Copied to. In the text box next to … Continue reading

Pro Web Hosting
This is the third in a series of blog posts about Southwest Cyberport web hosting plans. If you missed the first one, you can view it here. You can also read about the technical details of SWCP’s web hosting infrastructure on our companion blog. This article will explain the Pro Plan, and what type of sites it works well for. Pro Plan Cost: $25/month Features are 2000 MB of storage, 30 GB of monthly transfer, CGI support, advanced web statistics, MySQL and web applications, 15 email boxes. Pro web hosting is for sites with heavy duty requirements, or developers seeking the flexibility to roll their own custom applications. With 2000 MB of storage, 10 MySQL databases, 30 GB of transfer and 15 email boxes, this is the package for your busy company web site, your CMS, or your high volume e-commerce site. Most large websites today use a database as part of their design. The Pro package offers access to up to 10 MySQL databases, MySQL being the premiere database for the web. In addition, many web applications, such as forums, content management systems, and shopping carts require MySQL. If your site or application requires MySQL, and is not one of the web applications offered as part of the basic package, then the Pro package is what you want. Developers choose the Pro package for access to MySQL, PHP, and CGI. Your imagination is the limit to what you can … Continue reading
Handy Tip for Browsing the Web on a Slow Internet Connection
If you are using a slow internet connection from a laptop or desktop computer, try this trick to use the lightweight “mobile” version of many popular websites. These sites are designed for small screens and lower-bandwidth smart phones, but they’re quite functional and perfect for computers with slow internet connections. Just follow these steps: You need to use the Firefox web browser. Download Firefox here (it’s free) and install it if you don’t already have it. This may take a while if you have a slow connection. You’re using Firefox to view this page now, right? Good… Click here, then click the + Add to Firefox button. Proceed through the steps to download and install the User Agent Switcher Firefox extension, then restart Firefox. In your Firefox menu, go to Tools -> Default User Agent -> and select iPhone 3.0 That’s it. Test it out by going to CNN. You should be automatically redirected to CNN’s lightweight, mobile site – the address is http://m.cnn.com/. This should work for the “major” websites like Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Facebook, etc. To turn this behavior off, go to Tools -> iPhone 3.0 -> and select Default User Agent. You can easily switch between mobile and full versions of websites by changing this setting. This can be useful any time you are using a slow internet connection including • using a dial-up internet connection • using a slow public wi-fi access point at a coffee shop, hotel, airport, etc • using internet tethering through … Continue reading
