| This version of the helix design is about 4" high by 9 1/2" diameter, and contains about 60 pieces. The base is maple, and the helix is made from maple, zebrawood, and bloodwood. I learned a couple of important things when I did a set of these. One was a lesson about when not to use highly figured woods. The zebrawood, a very attractive gold and brown wood, is ordinarily a nice way to add some extra figuring to a design. In this case, though, the grain pattern of the zebrawood fights the intended pattern. |
