Technical Climbing Ratings

A NMMC group at Ceja Pelon
- Regular participation on NMMC climbs requires a Toprope, Climber, Single-Pitch Leader or Multi-Pitch Leader rating issued by the Technical Climbing Chairman or designate. A Toprope rating entitles a climber to participate in top rope outings only. With a Climber rating, a climber may participate in longer, multi-pitch climbs as well. Individuals with a Climber rating may, with the permission of the trip leader, lead pitches on club climbs, but may not lead club outings. A Single-Pitch Leader rating entitles a person to be the trip leader on NMMC rock climbing outings to climbing areas characterized by climbs of one pitch or less (topropes and sport climbs). A Multi-Pitch Leader Ratings entitles a person to lead single pitch and mutipitch club outings.
- To acquire a Toprope rating, contact the Technical Climbing Chairman to schedule a checkout session. During the checkout session, the individual will be required to demonstrate the skills listed in the Toprope Qualification Form. Check out pictures of the some of the knots you need for the Toprope rating.
- A Climber rating is awarded upon successful completion of the annual climbing school. If an individual has equivalent experience, he or she may contact the Technical Climbing Chairman to schedule a checkout session. The skills required to attain a Climber rating are listed on the Climber Qualification Form.
- In order to attain one of the LEADER ratings, an individual must satisfy all of the requirements outlined on either the Single-Pitch Leader Qualification Form or the Multi-Pitch Leader Qualification Form.
- Individuals who do not have the skills necessary for the ratings listed above are responsible for obtaining the necessary skills via other means. There is no instruction during club climbs.
- Regular participation in NMMC climbing activities is required to maintain ratings.
